“Pastor, I’m going to the university to study Biology, do you think I’d get a good job once I’m done?”
Of course, you can get a good job after your course in the university, but I might not be able to tell how or when. There are millions of graduates in the unemployment market today, and the reason for their unemployed status ranges from lack of competence to a serious economic challenge within their country. What I mean is, while competence in your area of study can get you a job, your competence may not guarantee you a job in an impoverished economy. In Nigeria for instance, we have graduates who are really intelligent, yet no job to showcase their skill.
These days, the average Nigerian organization employs friends or family members of existing workers, not necessarily those who applied for the job. They’d make a notice of an opening or a job vacancy, but they already know who they’d give the job to. I don’t blame them though, they have good reasons for that. The people they employ may not be as competent, but they’d rather stick to them for personal reasons.
My spiritual daughter is a graduate now, but I remember asking her why she wanted to study Econonics in school. Her response was that “so that I can get a job and make money”. The moment I heard that, I told her that it was a wrong mindset and approach towards education.
To educate a person means to reveal potentials that are locked up within that person. Once these potentials are revealed, it becomes the person’s responsibility to develop that potential till it becomes applicable to the society and ultimately contribute to national economy. So just because you’re studying Economics in school doesn’t mean you must have a career along that path, the course may just be a trigger for what you really need to do in this world.
I studied computer science in school, and while some of my colleagues became programmers, I became an online teacher. While they program codes to make a change, I program people to make a change. We did the same course, but different potentials were revealed in us. So don’t ask me how a person who studied Computer Science became a teacher of the gospel, it was never about the course, but about the potential it unlocked.
There are no guarantees of a job if you complete your education, but you’re sure to have a life if you’d nurture those potentials that were revealed during your education. Your focus in school shouldn’t be to learn everything the course has to offer; rather, it should be to learn something that your world needs someone to offer them.
People are not going to give you money or employ you because you studied Biology, they’d only give you money for the value and contributions your knowledge adds to their lives. For instance, even without an announcement, people who follow me ask for my account information to send me seeds. That’s because my services are contributing great value to their lives. Believe me, if they don’t consider my services valuable, they won’t send a dime. People are wiser now, they won’t spend their sweat on nothing.
My spiritual daughter is a professional career coach today, and the amazing part is that she discovered the potential to do so at the very first year she got into the university. She’s such an amazing person today and I’m proud of what she has become. Asides the fact that she started coaching people write from school, she got a job offer in the same line immediately after graduation. So she has both a job and a business that are in alignment. Isn’t that beautiful?
Parents, I don’t mean to be rude, but sometimes you need to seek counsel before you take certain decisions or actions on your grown up children. If your grown up child chooses a career path different from what was studied, support that child.
Your assignment was to train up a “child” in the way that he should go so that when he’s “grown” he won’t depart from that training. However, when the child has grown, minimize your training and only give counsel where necessary. You could force a child to eat food, but you can’t force an adult to eat. Don’t lose your child because of your ego. You may have given birth to a child, but when he’s grown, he has to be responsible for his world. I’ve witnessed parents seperate from their children because of this misunderstanding, and I thought it was necessary to mention it. You can’t force a change on a grown child, you can only lead a change. If you try to force it, you will lose it.
As I conclude, young people, don’t focus on making money, focus on making impact. Money naturally follows impact.
I hope this has brought enlightenment to someone.
Remain ever blessed, in Jesus precious name!
