“Pastor, I’ve been born again for ten years now, but I can’t really point to any breakthrough my salvation has brought to me. Could it be that I didn’t get saved properly?”
I’m not sure what you mean by not getting saved properly. However, Romans chapter 10 clearly states how a man can receive salvation. Let’s read how scripture puts it:
Romans 10:
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Did you see that? If you confess Jesus Christ as Lord over your life and you believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead after his sacrifice on the cross for you, then you will be saved. If that’s what you did ten years ago, then Jesus has been your Lord and Saviour ever since.
However, one of the greatest secrets you’d come to discover about this kingdom is that just because you’re now saved doesn’t mean you’d no longer suffer resistances. The scriptures didn’t leave us in the dark when it said “a great and effectual door is opened unto us, but there are many adversaries”. And I’ve told you before that adversaries are not just demonic obstacles, they operate on legal basis. So if you don’t understand the legalities of the kingdom of God, you’d continue to suffer in the hands of adversaries, even though you are born again.
This was one of the mysteries Jesus taught his disciples during his earthly ministry. Let’s see how scriptures put it:
John 15:
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
To abide in Jesus simply means to be redeemed, but for Jesus to abide in you means to allow his word dominate your heart in such a way that you breathe and live by it. When this two happens, then you will not just bring forth fruit, but much fruit.
Verse 6 further tells us that any man that doesn’t receive Jesus will be cast off into fire. And verse 7 clarifies that the way to let Jesus abide in you is by his word. So I know you’ve received Jesus as Lord and Saviour, but have you also received his word as your weapon against warfare?
As I conclude, if you want to see the benefits of the salvation you’ve received, then you have to start living by the word. You can’t receive Jesus and still be living by your old principles. Pouring new wine in an old wine bottle will destroy both the wine and the bottle.
