“Pastor, the cost of fuel has gone up again, how do we handle this situation?”

Handle it exactly how the Bible says you should handle it. Let me show you a few scriptures:

SCRIPTURE 1:

2 Corinthians 4(NIV):
18. So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

I think that’s clear enough. Don’t look at the troubles you can see now. Don’t worry yourself about the increase in fuel price, you’ve already been pre-informed that physical things are subject to change. The price of fuel can change at anytime, the cost of renting or buying a house can change at anytime, the cost of buying food can change at anytime, the cost of going to school to have quality education can change at anytime, the price of anything can change at anytime, so why should I bother myself when it eventually happens? I’ve already been pre-informed in scriptures.

Instead of worrying about things that are subject to change, that scripture admonishes us to focus on the unseen – which is the Word of God. God’s word and promises towards us are eternal, they’re the same yesterday, today and forever – no matter what is changing in the world.

SCRIPTURE 2:

Proverbs 18:
14 The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?

Did you see that? The spirit of man will sustain him in times of trouble. The moment you redirect the source of your sustainance to your physical provisions, then you’d be affected by the changes or challenges of this world. All those little worries here and there about the changes in this world are clear indications that you’re walking in the flesh. People who live by the spirit don’t worry about natural changes, they focus on the promises of God.

The unfortunate thing is, many Christians do not feed their spirit man with the word of God, so when challenges come, their spirit will not be strong enough to sustain them. Now you’d understand what the bible meant when it said “if you fail in the day of trouble, your strenght is small”.

As a Christian, you need to have a scriptural answer to everything that challenges your faith in Christ. When Satan tempted Jesus, Jesus didn’t response by His emotions, He responded by the scriptures. He was hungry, but he wouldn’t turn stone to bread, rather, He chose to be in the spirit.

Being in the spirit simply means living or acting in alignment to God’s word. The moment you start stealing your company’s money just because you want to meet up with the rapid changes in the world, then you’ve gone out of the spirit to live in the flesh. I was discussing with my boss yesterday about the change in fuel price and I was shocked when he said I’d have to start getting involved in fraudulent activities to meet up. On one part, he revealed what the world does when challenges arise, and on the other part, he doesn’t know that even in hard times believers are ordained to flourish.

Is it not written in your Bible? I shall be above only and not beneath, I shall be the head and not the tail. A thousand shall fall by my side and ten thousand by my right, but none shall come near me. No weapon formed against me shall ever prosper. All things work together for the good of them that love God. As long as I serve the Lord, I shall be blessed in my going out and coming in. The Lord shall compass me round about with favour as with a shield.

Let’s learn from Jesus, despite the hunger, he still lived in the spirit. And because he lived in the spirit, he fulfilled his purpose. When things go down for people in a difficult season, it’s because they began to neglect the word of God. Your body cannot sustain you, only your spirit can. If you live by the body you shall die, but if you through the spirit mortify the deeds of the body, you shall live.

Remember how Jesus cursed the fig tree for not having fruits? That’s how you should answer the changes that happen in this world. The fig tree dried up, which means the tree would never be a problem to him again. So I know that the price of fuel has increased, but I’d still buy full tank because my God shall supply all my need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. According to Matthew 6:33, I serve the Lord, and as an effective servant of God, I’m privileged to have a car for easy mobility. Since it’s a car I got from the Lord, the fueling is also under heaven’s economy. No stress or strain at all.
