“Pastor, please help me. God gave me an assignment, but I’m not sure I have capacity to execute it. What do I do?”
I understand how you feel, but that feeling of incapability is normal for those called by God. And while I’m tempted to tell you to “Go in this thy might”, I need to be sure that you actually have a might.
A man’s might is simply the measure of the applicable knowledge he lives and works with. The more a man knows, the more powerful he becomes. The next time you hear someone say “knowledge is power”, do not trivialize that statement. Knowledge truly empowers.
The only reason why you feel you don’t have the capacity to execute the assignment God gave you is because you don’t have sufficient knowledge about it. So instead of worrying about your incapability, go on a retreat for knowledge. Knowledge has a way of revealing potentials hidden in a person.
Imagine for a moment that God created you today and suddenly transported you into this world – with no clue about what the world is or how to relate with the people in it, what will you do first? Let me guess, you’d first learn how to relate with the people in it, right? To learn how to relate with the people in it, two ways would be considered; you’d learn from those who are currently in it, and you’d learn from those who made history while they were alive.
While learning from those who are currently alive would help you blend in to the current societal norms, learning from history will give you some level of maturity and stability. Reading through history will help you avoid errors in the present. In fact, the reason why this age is full of flaws is because many young people who rose to fame ignored history.
God’s servant Bishop David Oyedepo would often tell us how he read 39 biographies before he commenced his ministerial calling. Truthfully, if you’ve read resources from some of our fathers of faith, you’d see traces of their ministry in Bishop David Oyedepo’s life and ministry. I read about how John Wesley took care of his traveling pastors, including paying the school fees of their children. As long as they were serving God with him full time, the ministry took care of their financial needs. I’m not certain, but I believe that Bishop David Oyedepo must have learnt this from him, because the same thing is practiced in Living Faith Church Worldwide.
John Wesley didn’t make the best of choices when it came to his emotional life, he actually had difficult times in marriage – which lasted for many years. God’s servant must have looked elsewhere for mentorship on relationship and emotions. Actually, he’s told us over and again how he searched the bible for himself to find out what God’s will for marriage is – knowing that the bible is also a history book. Actually, no modern day truth can override whatever the bible says. Unfortunately, this generation has overridden many scriptural truths by their flawed ideologies.
When the idea for Covenant University was conceived, Bishop David Oyedepo gathered biographies of top universities around the world and studied them to know the things they did wrong and the things they did well. Once he was done studying, he was convinced that Covenant University will be one of the top universities in the world in his life time. As we speak, it’s already happening.
Learn to read history. The wisdom of the old gives you maturity and stability in the present. The knowledge of history will give you an edge over your peers. The reason why it seems like Christians live a more superior life is because we feed on ancient mysteries. We’re not willing to trade that ancient truth with any current truth, no matter how attractive it may appear.
Don’t just read books that reveals principles on how to get things done, read biographies of people who have done the things you want to do. One other thing that studying history will do for you is that it will reveal graces that are untapped. I’ve told you how I tapped the grace upon Daniel whilst I read about him in the bible. I’ve also told you how I tapped into the grace for writing with ecstasy whilst I read books written by Dr Jerry Savelle.
So study, both present information and history! The knowledge you gather will reveal strenght and possibilities. You don’t know what you’re capable of doing until you know the things that has been done and can be done.
I hope this has brought enlightenment to someone.
Remain ever blessed, in Jesus precious name!
