“Pastor, I want God to guide me in choosing a life partner, but I’ve never heard His voice. How do I go about it?”

If you’ve never heard God’s voice, then it’s a risk for you to trust any leading that comes by a voice. The primary way through which God speaks or guides us is by His written word, which is the Bible. So if you’re waiting on God to guide or lead you, then open your Bible and start reading.

Meanwhile, it’s important that we establish the fact that God is committed to guide everyone that calls upon Him for guidance. Matthew chapter 7 is very clear on this. Let’s see how scriptures put it:

Matthew 7:
7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?
10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

Did you see that? If you’re asking God for something, He’d give you. If you’re searching for something through His leading, you will find it. And if you’re desiring favour from man through Him, then you’d gain access to that favour. God is good, and He gives good to every one that “ask” Him.

The emphasy therefore should be on the word “ask”. If you study your Bible for exploration, you’d certainly get inspired and wiser, but chances are that you will not be guided to find that which you’re searching for. You may even come across the scripture you need while studying, but because God is not the one guiding you, you may not see it. The key to engaging God in your search or to get God to guide you is to ask. Everyone that asketh receiveth.

If you want God to show you your life partner, don’t just carry your Bible and start reading – just because I said God speaks through His written word, no! The first thing you must do is ask God to lead or guide you in finding your life partner. The moment you ask Him, then your spirit man will be repositioned from mere studying to receiving direction – as you study. The moment you sincerely ask God to lead you, open your Bible, you’d be amazed at the sentivity that would begin to proceed from your spirit. That’s because at that point, it is God that is now leading you, and He’s leading you to the word that will answer the question you asked Him.

If you visit a tourism site and decide not to hire a tour guide, chances are that you’d miss very vital details in the site. But if you go with the guidance of the tour guide, he’d lead you to exact places that would be worth your exploration. That’s what happens each time you consciously ask God to guide you on your journey through anything.

For example, someone is asking God if it was okay to relocate to another country because of the economic downturn in his country, and then he began to read his bible for what God would say. As he was reading, he encounters the portion of the bible where God spoke to Isaac against going to Egypt. “Go not to Egypt, but stay in this land… “. At that point, it wouldn’t just be the story of Isaac, it would be so magnified in his heart that he won’t doubt that it is God’s word for him. If that verse is for him, the subsequent verses would also be for him. Which means if he sows in the land like Isaac did, he’d reap an hundredfold in one year.

If you have difficulty understanding the bible directly, you can pick up spiritual books that relates with what you’re trusting God for and read. I remember how I asked God a question while praying one morning, and as I proceeded to work, my mind was on that question I asked The Lord. To my amazement, as I got to the office, my heart was drawn to the bookshelf, I picked the first book my eyes contacted, and as I opened the book, I saw the answer to the question I asked God written in the middle of the book.

It was such an amazing experience. That book had been lying there for years, but I wasn’t driven to it until I asked the Lord to guide me. The moment you ask the Lord to guide you, pick up your Bible or a book and start studying. Even if you’d hear God’s voice, it would be after you’ve encountered the written word.

I remember how I was battling to send money to my parents because my monthly salary was not even sufficient to convey me to work. I had to ask the Lord to help me. The moment I asked, I picked up my bible, and it was as though God opened the page for me. I saw a scripture that says “The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice”. I knew it was my word, but it still wasn’t clear enough, so I asked God what that scripture meant. To my amazement, I heard His direct voice, “My son, just continue following my word and your father will one day rejoice”. I couldn’t doubt the voice because it was inline with what I had just read.

The reason why many people doubt the voice they heard is because they’ve not encountered the basis for that voice from the Word. If the voice came as an aftermath of the Word you received, then you can’t doubt it. It would be like a conversation that started with the written word but continued by the spoken Word.

So stop waiting for His voice, just ask Him to lead you. Once you do, carry your Bible and start reading from Genesis. Before you get to Revelation, God would have spoken to you, I guarantee you.
