“Pastor, what’s so special about praying between 12 midnight and 3am?”

Nothing actually, it’s just that back in the old testament, it was a practice for God to visit man during the early hours of the morning. As you already know, that’s between 12 midnight and 6am. Remember that He only visited Adam in the cool of the day.

Job referred to how God visits man every morning. Let’s see how scriptures put it:

Job 7:
17 What is man, that thou shouldest magnify him? and that thou shouldest set thine heart upon him? 18 And that thou shouldest visit him every morning, and try him every moment?

Did you see that? God visited man every morning. There are quite a number of peculiar things about the early hours of the morning, but most importantly is that pressure and tension is less. God loves to commune with us when our mind is less occupied and calm, and that clearly reveals why He likes to visit in the morning.

The same Job gives us a hint about what God does when He visits. Let’s read from scriptures:

Job 33:
14 For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.
15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed.
16 Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction.
17 That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.
18 He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.

Verse 15 clearly refers to a time after midnight, that’s usually the time that man is deeply asleep. Nobody has been able to explain how we sleep by 9pm and wake up around 6am in the morning. Yet, when we sleep in the afternoon, we may not sleep longer than 2 hours. That’s the mystery Job tried to explain. God scheduled that time for man to go into deep sleep so that He can communicate important information to us through dreams and visions. And the reason why He does that is to deliver man from trouble.

I’ve had several dreams where God hinted me about vehicular challenges on the road. If it’s an accident, I’d pray against it once I wake up. But if it’s a repair I need to carry out, I’d schedule maintenance with my mechanic. He reveals those things to me so that I won’t fall into the trap of the wicked. Unfortunately, some people’s dreams get manipulated and they forget what they dreamt. Matthew 13:25 says, “But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way”. It’s not a coincidence that it’s the same time God visits to give an important information that the devil visits to corrupt the information.

Although God sealed the instruction, but a man who has not built sensitivity through consistent prayers may not be able to break through the tares that the devil sowed, and that also means that he may eventually fall into the trap.

As New Testament believers, since we’re not sure of retrieving valuable information passed across through our dreams, isn’t it better to seek God in prayers at the same time when He likes to visit? Proverbs 8:17 says, “I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me”. That’s right! If you seek God before pressure and tension begins to arise for the day, you’d find Him. The chances of finding God when you’re under pressure is very slim. To find God, stillness is a necessity. The bible says, “Be still and know that I am God”.

King David in Psalm 63:1 says, “O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is”. No wonder he always found God. Before anything began to occupy his mind, he had spent time with God to receive grace for the day.

I love Isaiah 55:6. It says, “Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near”. So there’s a time when it’s easier to find God, and it’s that time when you’re less pressured. The more still you are, the closer He is to reach.

Seeing that we now have the Holy Spirit, we don’t have to wait till the night before we pray or seek God, we can pray anytime. But remember, it’s easier to hear and receive from God when we’re less tensed. Clearly, considering the busy world we now live in, we’re very unlikely to have such moments except during the early hours of the morning. So, this is why we encourage Christians to pray between 12 midnight and 3am. But beyond praying at that time is practicing stillness.
