“Pastor, please pray for me to have financial breakthrough. I have plenty of bills to pay”

Ofcourse, I’d pray for you, but a prayer for financial breakthrough will not come to pass until certain understanding is established in your heart.

It is true that Jesus died to receive power, riches, wisdom, strength, honour, glory, and blessing, but none of those things would automatically come upon us, not until we’ve met certain scriptural demands. For instance, you can’t pray for power without establishing the purpose for the empowerment you seek. God will never empower you without a purpose. I lead a fellowship in my office and I’ve discovered that each time I desire certain graces for the sake of the fellowship, God releases it to me. If He doesn’t give me, then it’s certainly because I don’t need that grace for that purpose.

You’d recall that in Mark chapter 16, after Jesus gave His disciples an assignment, He immediately empowered them for the job. Let’s read from scriptures:

Mark 16:
15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues.
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

Look around you, you’d discover that Christians who are not serving any kingdom purpose rarely walk in power. They may pray for empowerment all day, but as long as there’s no purpose, they won’t get empowered. Power must have a purpose!

Just as power must have a purpose, riches must also have a purpose, and as weird as this may sound, taking care of yourself isn’t a concrete part of that purpose. Read your Bible, nobody ever became rich for self. The case of the rich fool was an error, that’s why he didn’t live to enjoy the riches. I feel bad that I’m the one who had to break this news to you, but if the reason why you want God to give you riches is because you want to take care of self, then you’re not ready for riches.

Perhaps Romans 8:28 will now make sense to you. It says, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose”. All things, including those things that Jesus received, would only work for our good according to God’s purpose.

The purpose of riches is for good works, primarily in the kingdom, then to the world. 2 Corinthians 9:8 says, “And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others”. This means that each time God supplies for you, the supply should serve two purposes; meeting your needs and meeting the needs of others. Unfortunately, not many Christians understand this principle, they use all that was supplied to meet their needs, unknowing to them that it is what they give to others that secures replenishment for them. The bible is very clear about this truth. Let’s see a few scriptures:

SCRIPTURE 1:

Proverbs 28:
27 He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.

The lack in a man’s life can be explained, he does not consider the poor. You may get a financial breakthrough, but if you don’t consider the poor, then you’d always need financial breakthrough. The difference between people who live in financial prosperity and those who always need financial breakthrough is that people who live in financial prosperity know how to distribute. Givers never lack!

Having understood this principle, I’ve continued to add to the list of people I send money to on a monthly basis. And believe me, I’ve never had to pray for supplies, because a purpose has already been established for financial supplies. And when the money comes, I’m willing and ready to distribute it. That’s actually another problem, some Christians tell God what they’d do when money comes, but they’re never willing to release it when it finally comes.

SCRIPTURE 2:

Malachi 3:
10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
11 And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.
12 And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts.

Just last year, someone who had been praying to God for financial favour finally received it. I was with the person when the alert came in and to be honest, the joy was palpable. This person had listed everything that needed to be done – which had personal pleasures on the top of the list. To my amazement, paying her tithe wasn’t on the list. So I was tempted to ask if the tithe would not be paid. Considering the response I got, I knew the person would be back to zero in no time. “I’ll pay tithe in the next one, this money is not for tithe”. Yeah, that was the response.

This year, I increased my tithe to 30% from the 20% I was giving last year. While someone may want to start an argument about this, I’m simply trading with wisdom. The money would eventually be used to promote the kingdom, and that means it’s serving a purpose. And with that in mind, I’m not expected to suffer any form of lack.

Now that we’ve established this understanding, it is now safe to pray for you. And I pray that my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Amen!
