“Pastor, my salary is so small, I doubt if I’d ever have enough to promote the kingdom. What do I do?”

One of the greatest secrets you’d learn about this kingdom is that God grants us access to the riches in this world to test our faithfulness. No matter how much or how little you get, the test is the same for all. Let’s see how scriptures put it:

Luke 16:
11. If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?

So there’s something called true riches, and from that scripture, it is not the kind of riches that we have in this world, but the kind that is bestowed upon us by the blessings of God. The bible says “the blessings of God makes rich and adds no sorrow to it”. The fact that you’re worried about insufficiency already tells me that you’ve not gained access to true riches yet. You can’t have access to true riches and still be worried. True riches is not sponsored by money, it is sponsored by the blessings of God. So even if you lose all the money in your account, you’d still be rich. If they can’t take the blessing, then they can’t take the riches.

God’s agenda is to grant us access to true riches, but the condition is that we must be faithful in using unrighteous mammon, especially to the advantage of His kingdom. The Amplified version of that scripture says “Therefore if you have not been faithful in the use of earthly wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you?”.

So, it’s not about how much you earn, but how you use what you earn to the advantage of God’s kingdom. As earlier remarked, whether you earn little or much, the test of faithfulness is the same. Let me show you two examples:

THE WIDOW OF ZAREPHATH

1 Kings 17:
10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.
11 And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.
12 And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.
13 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.
14 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.
15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.
16 And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.

Notice that she had to give the prophet from the little she had to secure the blessings of God. The riches of this world will fail at some point, it is true riches which is sponsored by blessings that will sustain us.

THE RICH MAN

Matthew 19:
16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?
21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.
22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.
23 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Did you notice that Jesus told him to sell all he had and give to the poor so that he would secure blessings in heaven. This was his test of faithfulness to God’s kingdom. And like the Widow of Zarephath, he was also told the benefit of obeying the instruction. Unfortunately for him, he went away sad because he had great possessions. If only he knew that a great possession cannot match up with true riches. His great possession can perish in a moment, but true riches cannot perish because it is sponsored by the blessing. The rich man missed an opportunity to be blessed because he was unwilling to trade what should have given him access to blessings.

Let me conclude by visiting earlier verses from the same Luke chapter 16.

Luke 16:
9 And I say to you, Make friends for yourselves through the wealth of this life, so that when it comes to an end, you may be taken into the eternal resting-places.
10 He who is true in a little, is true in much; he who is false in small things, is false in great.
11 If, then, you have not been true in your use of the wealth of this life, who will give into your care the true wealth?

Did you notice verse 9? It simply means that you should sow seeds into the lives of people with the money you get from worldly investments. If you do that, you’d be taking into a place where you’d rest from financial pressures. Think about it, sowing seeds attract blessings, and blessing gives birth to true riches. So when the wealth of this world fails, when your company refuses to pay salary for months, you’d still be flourishing because you have access to true riches.

The riches that comes from this world is little, while the riches that comes from blessings is much. If you want to access the riches that comes from blessings, then you must be faithful to God in using the riches you get from this world. And remember, whether what you get from this world is small or big, the test of faithfulness is the same.
