“Pastor, what does it mean to be covered by the blood of Jesus?”

The average believer would translate that statement to mean “protection by the blood of Jesus”. As much as I’d like to discredit that translation, I’d rather focus on explaining what it really means to be covered by the blood.

First, we understand from scriptures that blood has a voice in the realm of the spirit. When Cain unjustly killed his brother Abel, God told Cain that his brother’s blood was crying to Him for vengeance. And God had to avenge Abel.

Just as the law court judges a matter by human witnesses, part of the witnesses that God uses to judge matters on earth is blood. Let’s see how scriptures put it:

1 John 5:
8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

Did you see that? It’s impossible for those three things to bear false witness. For instance, we’re told from scriptures that no man can know the secrets of a man except the man’s spirit. Which means if you can tap into the man’s spirit, then you can know what he’s hiding.

So God uses these 3 witnesses on earth, which includes the blood. And to be candid, He doesn’t joke with blood. Scripture tells us how God warned Ezekiel that the blood of the wicked might be upon his head if he doesn’t give them a warning from Him. Let’s read from scriptures;

Ezekiel 33:8 (NIV)
When I say to the wicked, ‘You wicked person, you will surely die,’ and you do not speak out to dissuade them from their ways, that wicked person will die for their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.

God would always respond and judge matters using the blood.

In the Old Testament, we read that the blood of animals were often used as an atonement for sin. Which means blood does not only speak vengeance, it could also speak forgiveness or a replacement. So the punishment that should go to the people who sinned would be recorded for the animal.

Ofcourse it worked, except that its effect wasn’t long lasting. Which meant that they had to revisit that sacrifice occasionally. Jesus died as the lamb of God that took away the sins of the world. And we are told that there’s no more sacrifice for the remission of sin. Jesus’s blood doesn’t just cover for one sin or one moment, it covers till eternity, and His blood speaks forgiveness and atonement.

To atone means to restore a broken relationship. We know that sin naturally breaks or influences our relationship with God. And once our relationship is influenced by sin, our possibilities as Christians and in the kingdom would be limited. The bible tells us that sin can literally seperate us from seeing the hand of God.

The moment you receive Jesus, the blood becomes your access card to advance in any area of your life. That’s right! No more limitations. You should not be able to use the resources or provisions of the kingdom as long as you’re in sin. But the moment you plead the blood of Jesus, the blood covers for your limitations and grants you access.

This means that saying “I cover myself with the blood of Jesus” isn’t the right declaration. You can’t cover yourself with the blood of Jesus. Moreover, it doesn’t mean that kind of covering. You should simply say “I am covered by the blood of Jesus” or “I plead the blood of Jesus”. That’s a wiser way to engage the blood. Remember that God Judges matters by the blood.

If you understand this, you’d be engaging the blood every day. Perhaps you’ve been struggling to gain admission into school, it may be sin that is causing that struggle. And if that’s the case, you just need to plead the blood of Jesus. The blood of Jesus isn’t just for protection, it’s for atonement, which means it restores your relationship with God. As long as you are with God, nothing shall be impossible.

So as you step out in the morning, plead the blood of Jesus. And if the enemy threatens to come against you, let them know that the blood covers protection in your going out and coming in. I may not qualify for protection due to sin, but the blood has covered for me. It’s like enjoying protection because you’re under the covering of the president. You may be a terrible citizen that deserves to be punished, but as long as you’re under the covering of the president, nobody can touch you. That’s how powerful the blood covering is.
