“Pastor, why is it that those who have a golden heart to give hardly gets money to give, meanwhile those who are rich don’t give?”

Your view isn’t very accurate, and this is because a rich person who doesn’t give or at least have plans to give would lose his life. Since the time of the rich fool in the bible, I’m not sure we’ve recorded another case of a selfish rich person.

We were told that the rich fool refused to help poor Lazarus for selfish reasons, and so God took his life. If the only reason why a rich person refused to help you is selfishness, he’d definitely end up like that rich fool in the bible. God is the same yesterday, today and forever.

If you ask a rich person for money and your request wasn’t honored, a number of principles by the rich man may have caused it. Let me list a few:

– BUDGETING

If you ever want to become rich in this world, then you must place value on budgeting. Budget all your expenses, including what you give. If tithing has a stipulated percentage, I see no reason why you shouldn’t allocate a certain percentage for every other giving, including what you give to your parents and the poor.

If you keep giving without a budget, it won’t be long before you too would become a needy person that needs help. So rich people understand this, and that’s one of the principles that has helped them maintain their riches. If the budget that was created for the month has been exhausted, every other person that comes should wait till the budget is replenished next month, of which I don’t expect them to still have that need by next month – even though some still do.

– SCALE OF IMPORTANCE OR PREFERENCE

Sometimes the need presented may not be important, even though it can still be accommodated in the budget. You can’t be asking me to buy you a flight ticket when you can afford a bus ticket, especially when there’s nothing urgent waiting for you at your destination. Travel by road and maintain your dignity.

Imagine that someone approaches you in a restaurant to give him money so that he can buy meat on his food. He already has money to buy food, is it important that he eats meat that day?

Some other times, the rich person may just prefer not to attend to that need. I’ve seen occasions where people begin to consider you to be their god after a while. Perhaps you’ve attended to every single need they presented and now instead of trusting God for their need, they come straight to you. In other to avoid situations like that, the rich person may prefer not to meet certain needs. Personally, I’ve done this many times. I remember how a colleague met me to aid her with transport fare to go home, seeing that it was becoming a regular thing for her, I decided not to aid her that day. Ofcourse she didn’t hesitate to paint me as a bad person before other colleagues, but I had to do that so she could both learn to create a budget for her transportation and trust God when it is not sufficient. Even after that, she still came back, except that she now understood how to control it.

So, what was requested may be within my budget, but I may prefer not to give for reasons that are not selfish.

– DECEPTION/EMOTIONAL BLACKMAIL

As a social media pastor, I get a lot of requests from people to help them with various financial needs. While some may be genuine, some others just want to take advantage of the fact that I’m a servant of God. But no, you can’t take advantage of me that easily, because I’ve learnt to attend to matters based on their genuinity – even though it’s still within my budget.

I take my time to ask these people questions, and if they are in remote areas, I develop a system of verification. For some of them, I ask them to attend a church which I’m sure would have a branch where they live. When they get to the church, I’d ask to speak to their senior pastors. If I can speak to the pastor, then I can verify their claim. You’d be surprised that they never visit the church. In fact, they never call me back after that.

Speaking of having a golden heart to give, just because you have a heart to give doesn’t mean you understand the purpose of giving in the kingdom. It’s one thing to be a giver, and another thing to be serving purpose. If you’re still in lack despite your heart to give, then it’s most likely because you haven’t really understood and practiced kingdom giving. If that’s the case, then you just need to study about it.
