“Pastor, I’m an auxiliary nurse, but I don’t want to continue in that field. I want to do something that will draw people closer to God. I already have passion for speaking, but my English is not good enough. Should I go to school to learn English language?”

First I must start by commending your mindset towards kingdom advancement. The truth is, God is less interested in anything that isn’t going to be beneficial to the advancement of His kingdom. If you see God investing in something, then it’s because His kingdom has a stake in that thing.

Having said that, I doubt if there’s a profession in this world that cannot be a leverage to draw people closer to God. The fact that you are an auxiliary nurse even gives you a better advantage over people in other fields. You work in the hospital, a place where sick people find solace, whether through medicine or through counsel. From experience, a sick person doesn’t reject the gospel, they’d give you attention.

When the bible spoke about people who are at the valley of decision, sick people are part of those people. They need someone who would give them hope to keep pushing, despite their condition. Many people immediately go into safe-mode once they hear that they have a health condition; they desist from using their full ability, not because they can’t, but because the diagnosis messed up their mentality. Even an unbeliever at this state prays to God for intervention. Now imagine if you approach such a people with the gospel of healing, health and wholeness.

If I’m not mistaken, an auxiliary nurse is a healthcare professional who helps patients with their basic daily care. They work closely with their patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse. An Auxiliary Nurse plays a vital role in ensuring that patients are comfortable and have their personal needs met.

From my research, an auxiliary nurse is trained to have compassion. As an auxiliary nurse, your patients need to feel supported and you must treat them with empathy and compassion. You also need to communicate with the patient’s friends and families who could be worried and anxious about their loved one. The patients may have delicate states of health, both physically and mentally, your job is to provide them care but also to calm and reassure them. Without compassion, you cannot be an effective nursing assistant. The last time I checked, compassion is a virtue of the Spirit.

Additional responsibilities for an auxiliary nurse include; monitoring patient health and vital signs, reporting all changes or important observations to the nurse, keeping patient documentation up to date and taking medical histories, toileting assistance, making beds, helping the patient get dressed, bathing, showering and teeth cleaning, feeding and helping the patient drink, guiding the patient with exercises, and many more. I know these are really tedious tasks, but that also means that the auxiliary nurse actually spends more time with the patient than a registered nurse. So you have time to pray with the patient, you have time to share the word and make some declarations on the patient. If that’s not drawing people closer to God, tell me what it is.

During Covid-19 pandemic, a testimony was shared by a nurse on how she got some patients healed. She’d administer the anointing oil on them alongside the prescribed medications. She’d encourage them in the Lord with assurance that they’d overcome. To her amazement, while the news of people dying by the outbreak increased in their region, the patients that were under her care were supernaturally healed by God. The more shocking part was, while many of those nurses got infected, she was Covid-19 free, despite several close contacts. That’s definitely kingdom work!

Just incase you’re worried about the pay, an auxiliary nurse can actually become a registered nurse, it all depends on the qualification received while training as an auxiliary nurse. There is a minimum NCE qualification that is required to be admitted into the school of nursing. With this, you can become a student nurse which is equivalent to a registered nurse. What I mean is, after obtaining NCE, your next step will be to move from the position of auxiliary nurse to that of a student nurse. But if you don’t have NCE, then you’ll need to undergo a 6 months conversion program before you can be admitted into the school of nursing.

Since you only wanted to learn English language for better communication, I don’t think you need a formal school system to improve your communication. There are lots of professional communication courses offered in organizations around you or even online, you can register with them. With a little dedication, you’d communicate better. Asides that, commit yourself to reading, watching movies – especially movies with sound English communication. Observe how they use words, then try to replicate the same. That’s how I learnt how to communicate better. I didn’t study English Language in school, neither did I study writing. I just took advantage of the resources I could access, and here I am. Moreover, if it’s for the kingdom, then expect the Holy Spirit to quicken your understanding.
