“Pastor, despite my heavy prayers, why do I always appear powerless in my dreams?”
One of the purposes of prayer is to engage in battles by the spirit. However, the only thing that can dress or equip you for a successful battle in prayer is the word of God. That’s right! The word of God dresses you for battle! If you don’t study and meditate on the word adequately, there are certain battles you can’t win.
I’ve said over and again, the bible was not given to us just so we can quote scriptures; rather it was given to help us understand the character of God in all situations. Understanding the character of God is still the easiest way to know God, and those who do know their God will always be strong and do exploits.
In John 15:7, the bible says, “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you”. To abide in Jesus clearly means to be saved, but being saved alone doesn’t guarantee that you’d be equipped as you pray, that’s why the second part was mentioned; God’s word must abide in you. Once his word has found residence in your heart, then you can ask for anything in prayers and be sure of answers.
Bishop David Oyedepo has often shared a story of how he planned to pray about a situation. But before he would go to his prayer room, he sat down to study his bible to know exactly what God’s word says about that situation. By the time he was done studying, his spirit was already charged up to pray. To his amazement, as he approached his prayer room, he heard the voice of God telling him that he shouldn’t bother praying about that situation again and that he had already won.
Clearly, the demons that were behind that situation took off the moment they saw his new armour in the spirit. Believe me, it’s not every believer that demons contend with, some of those demons actually flee for their lives. They know that if they engage in that battle, they’d sustain serious injuries or even be destroyed.
Speaking of armour, Apostle Paul further tells us that God’s word is an armour that can be put on. Let’s read his epistle to the Ephesians:
Ephesians 6:
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness
15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God
18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.
These verses makes me so excited; so everytime I meditate and understand a scripture, I put on an armour in the spirit. The more I receive the word, the stronger my armour becomes. Isn’t it amazing that the shield, the helmet, and the sword are all produced by the word?
If you didn’t have a sword and a shield when demons attacked you in your dream, then it clearly means that you’ve not equipped yourself enough by the word. The word is the equipper, the word is the dresser, the word is your arsenal.
It’s after you’ve been equipped that verse 18 now comes to play, “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit… “. That’s right! A person who is equipped by the word can pray in the Spirit. But a person who isn’t equipped will pray in the flesh. Prayer in the Spirit will always carry spiritual power, while prayer made in the flesh will carry no weight.
I hope this has brought enlightenment to someone.
Remain ever blessed, in Jesus precious name!
