“Pastor, each time something good is about to come my way, something bad happens to take it away. What could be wrong?”

Many things could be wrong, but one thing I know that causes a potential blessing to die on the way is the words of our mouth. That’s right! Many Christians have lost opportunities only because of what they said. Painfully, even many who receive prophecies still manage to abort those prophecies by their words. You just received a prophetic blessing that God will give you a job, two days after, you’re already confessing that things are difficult in your country.

Let me show you a scripture:

Proverbs 18:
20 A man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

So from verse 20, it is clear that our satisfaction in this world isn’t in the hand of anybody or any government, rather it’s in what proceeds out of our mouth. Even if I pray for you and prophesy from now till next week, if what is coming out of your mouth is not in agreement, your satisfaction is not in view.

You have to understand this; your life can only enjoy satisfaction by the words that proceeds out of your mouth. When God was faced with an earth that was without form and void, it was His word that gave Him the satisfaction He needed. If we are made to live like God, then don’t expect to reap positivity when you speak negatively. What you sow through your speech is what you’d reap in your life.

The second part of verse 20 says, “…with the increase of his lips shall he be filled”. In other words, while a positive confession will give you a satisfactory lifestyle, an increase in your confession will fill your life with the things you confess.

Verse 21 continues by saying “death and life are in the power of the tongue”. I don’t believe that this scripture refers to a literal tongue, it most likely means vocal language. That means “language” in the realm of the spirit isn’t necessarily English, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, French or Spanish; language is either death or life. Death and life can be released by our vocal languages. It’s why when we used foul languages as children, our parents cautioned us with statements like, “mind your language”. They knew that a misuse of words could affect our lives. Each time you speak, the angels check to see if what you spoke is death or life. If you notice that things have been dying around you, check what you’ve been speaking. Positive speaking increases you, negative speaking does the opposite.

So each of those times you said “I am tired of this life”, God probably cautioned you to mind your language. Each of those times you said you are broke, God was nudging you to mind your language. Each of those times you said your child is stubborn, you probably didn’t hear the Lord saying “don’t talk like that”. The worse part was probably when He cautioned you to stop saying your marriage is not working. Perhaps you continued saying those things, and just maybe it has landed you in trouble. Ofcourse I pray that God will deliver you from those troubles, but you have to learn how to mind your language. Just because you’re overgrown and your earthly parents can no longer caution you to mind your language doesn’t mean your heavenly Father can’t caution you. Mind your language!

This is probably one of the reasons why the Holy Ghost gives us the gift of tongues, so that He can be sure we’re speaking life and not death. According to Apostle Paul, the Holy Spirit gives two types of tongues; the tongues of men and the tongues of angels. The tongues of angels is most likely that which we use in communicating with God directly. Now that I think about it, God is so merciful. Just so that we don’t mess up our life with our words, He gave us the gift of tongues. Now I understand why people who frequently speak in genuine tongues do well in life.

Hmm… Everything is now beginning to make sense. Why would Apostle Paul thank God that he spoke in tongues more than the other disciples? Could this be the reason for his unmatchable exploits in the kingdom?
