“Pastor, I made a joke saying I was broke, could it be the reason why I’ve been facing financial difficulties”.

First, I don’t see how one can make a joke of being broke. It’s either you’re trying to make someone believe that you really can’t render help to them, or you don’t want someone to ask you for money. If that’s the case, then your conscience would have pricked you the moment you uttered that word. If your heart did prick you, then it was a warning sign that what you said would be detrimental to your well-being.

Don’t get me wrong, just because the bible says death and life are in the power of the tongue doesn’t mean we’re not allowed to joke as believers. We can make jokes. Jokes stir up laughter, and laughter is something every one who sits in heaven must possess. The bible says, “He that sits in heaven shall laugh”. I don’t see how else a person can be laughing without a joke or at least an hilarious moment. Sometimes I wonder how hard God laughs when He see the hilarious moves we make. God may be angry with the wicked, but He sure has a fun time watching His children grow in Him. So jokes are necessary for laughter. However, if these jokes pricks our conscience while we laugh, then it’s a warning sign. Let me show you a scripture:

Mark 11:
23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

Did you see that? When you say something that your heart agrees with, then you shall have what you said. Likewise, when you say something that your heart does not agree with, then it won’t happen to you. The condition of our heart is very important to our confessions and communications. If there’s no nudging in our heart when we said what we said, then we’re safe.

This also applies to what we hear or think. If someone says something negative to you and you do not let it get into your heart, then it’s not expected to affect you in anyway. But if you begin to worry yourself about what you heard, then there might be a problem. Remember that the things which Job feared eventually came upon him.

Personally, I’m more sensitive to that nudging in my heart when I communicate. For instance, the moment I utter a prideful statement in my conversation with someone, I’d immediately sense it in my heart. Once I get that feeling, I’d quickly correct it. Just yesterday I tried to make a joke with the Lord, I had delayed writing yesterday’s article because someone was using my phone to take some photos. When it finally occurred to me that I could also use my second phone, I made a joke with the Lord saying something like, “Lord, let’s leave that phone with them and work with this”. Personally, I thought it was funny, but the Holy Spirit pricked my heart immediately. Then I realized that I shouldn’t have allowed anyone use my phone, at least until I was done with writing in the morning.

When I say nudging in the heart, I simply mean a confirmation from the Holy Spirit. Recall that the bible says “The Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are sons of God”. So anything that doesn’t depict the character of a good son, the Holy Spirit will send the signal to your spirit, which you’d perceive through your heart.

Consequently, the next time you “speak to a mountain” and you know that your heart does not agree to what you said, then don’t expect that mountain to obey you. If there’s no heart connection, don’t expect results.

As I conclude, don’t joke with things that are detrimental to your success. But when you do and you notice that you’ve erred, cancel what you’ve said by the Blood of Jesus, just so that it doesn’t have an effect on you. Remember, death and life are in the power of the tongue.
