“Pastor, I’m about to lose my job, and things are currently hard in the country. I don’t want to be a beggar, please help me”

I don’t mean to embarrass you, but why do I feel you’re the kind of person that will resort to begging whenever you’re financially challenged? If you’re that kind of person, then you have to change that mentality.

The Just shall live by faith. And the last time I checked, begging isn’t an act of faith, it’s actually a statement that clearly says “God is incapable of supplying all your needs”. And that’s not true, it’s just that some of us don’t pass the test of patience required to get God to work. We claim to be waiting on the Lord or trusting God, but the moment the challenge becomes threatening, we resort to begging – which becomes an alternative to our faith in God.

I’m deliberately using the word “we” to establish the fact that even I was once guilty of this. The moment I’m in a fix, I’d go about looking for someone to beg, even unbelievers. Some Christians have gotten so used to begging that they now use emotional blackmail to get at you. They’d say things like, “Please help a brother in need”, “Jesus would have helped me…”. Personally, I don’t fall for such blackmails anymore. If you come to beg me with emotional excuses, I’d either counsel you or ignore you. Now this doesn’t mean that I don’t help people. It just means that I don’t waste resources on people who do not want to mature.

So yes, I had to first work on a change of mindset. I determined that if God would not supply my needs, then I shouldn’t beg anybody to. I stopped visiting everyone that used to help me each time I begged them for money or food. I stopped calling them. I literally disconnected myself from them. By the time it became obvious to them, that yoke had been broken and my mind had been renewed.

I hope I didn’t make that sound easy, because it wasn’t. Just because I stopped begging didn’t mean that I had enough resources, it just meant that I learnt to be contented with whatever I had. I remember one of those days, all I had in my house was raw rice, onion, and indomie seasoning. I mix them together to prepare a “very delicious” jollof rice. No tomatoes, no pepper, no protein, nothing else. I could have easily asked my neighbour to help me with those things, but I was determined.

It was in the process that I learnt about the covenant of financial prosperity. I’ve been hearing the sermons, but it only became clear in my determination and desperation for a change from the Lord. I learnt that the only way out of poverty is to look for ways to give, no matter how little. I also realized that the reason why my situation didn’t change was because I was always looking for who to receive from instead of looking for who to give. You don’t need to look for people to receive from, just give and you shall receive. That’s the law!

Once my mindset had been changed, it became easy to do everything else, including get a job, and even build a relationship with God. That’s right! It will be hard for a beggar to build a quality relationship with God. If you know anyone who has, please let me know.

Having said that, to ensure you don’t struggle despite the economic situation, take your commitment to the covenant of prosperity more seriously.

You probably hoped I’d say you should look for another job in faith or take your business more seriously. Of course, you should take your business seriously or look for another job, but if it’s struggle you want to eliminate from your life, then the only thing that is powerful enough to do that is the covenant of prosperity. Let’s see how scriptures put it:

Genesis 8:
22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

Did you see that? I stand to be corrected, but I believe this is the only law that guarantees that your harvest season will not cease. That’s right! Customers will not stop coming, production will not cease, expansion will not cease. No other law guarantees a continuous flow of harvest except the law of seed time and harvest, not even the law of skill.

There are many skillful, prayerful and word-loaded Christians who are being controlled by the economic situation of their land. When the economy is down, they are down too. They haven’t realized that the covenant of prosperity is God’s bailout strategy for hard times. Many of us are aware that Isaac received a hundredfold return for his business during famine, yet most of us miss a very vital detail, it was in that same famine that he sowed.

The covenant of seed time and harvest is associated to the law of giving and receiving. The fact that it’s a law means that for as long as you commit to giving, then you must receive, the economic situation notwithstanding. This is why worldly people who commit to this law also prosper. Painfully, many Christians don’t know how to give. And a more painful thing is that these new age pastors have further complicated the matter. They’d tell you that you’re already blessed in Jesus, and that you don’t need to give to secure God’s blessing.

It’s true that we have been blessed, but the Bible didn’t fail to tell us the kind of blessing that God blessed us with. Ephesians 1:3 says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ”. That’s right, they’re spiritual blessings, in heavenly places, in Christ.

Was it not the same spiritual blessing that Abraham released upon Isaac? We were told that Abraham gave material inheritances to his other children, but unto Isaac, he released a blessing. The blessing had been honoured in heaven, but the only way it would be honoured on earth was that Isaac had to sow into the land.

That’s right! Let your seed consistently go into the land. I know you’re blessed with all spiritual blessings and you’re definitely seated with Christ in heavenly places, but if I’m not mistaken, you live on earth. And the last time I checked, God said as long as the earth remain, sowing and harvesting shall not cease.

The covenant of financial prosperity sustains its practitioners through hard times. No matter what is affecting the world, it won’t affect them. From experience, what affects others actually increases them. Check all those people who were not affected by the Pandemic, you’d be amazed that a large percentage of them practice the law of giving and receiving.
