“Pastor, the lady I planned to marry suddenly changed her mind. Although we usually have petty arguments, but could that be the reason why she changed her mind? I’ve prayed and fasted 7 days for God to touch her heart again, but all to no avail”
First, it’s difficult to hear from God when one’s emotions are greatly attached to something or someone. Men of God who are doing really great in ministry understands this. They love their wife and their children, but their love is more deliberate than emotional. They know that the devil can use their emotion against them. He can afflict their wife or children with sickness, knowing that the man of God will be distracted from his spiritual assignment because of his emotions.
God is a Spirit, and our emotions towards other things will always be a hindrance when we worship Him. If your emotions towards a woman led you to fast and pray for 7 days, how do you think God will take that? Have you ever fasted and prayed 7 days for the progress of the things of God? Have you ever fasted and prayed 7 days for a soul to be saved? Are you really expecting that God will give you a YES or NO answer in this situation?
God loves you first, and He’s probably not going to interfere in anything that may be a threat to you loving Him in return. My advice, I’m not going to ask you to let her go, rather, I’d ask you to deal with that emotion so that you can hear what God is saying.
I know it’s difficult, but that’s the price you’d have to pay to hear from God about the matter. You have to be strong and focus on God’s love towards you and your love towards God. God gave Abraham a son, yet He requested for him as sacrifice to put Abraham’s love in check. That’s right! The whole idea of telling Abraham to sacrifice Isaac is to check if Abraham loved God more. Believe me, anything you love more than God is a threat to your relationship with God.
God gave David a son through Bathseba, David fasted for 7 days just so that the child would not die. After the child eventually died, David went back to his duty has though nothing ever happened. Let’s see how scriptures put it:
2 Samuel 12:
16 David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth.
17 And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.
18 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he would not hearken unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?
19 But when David saw that his servants whispered, David perceived that the child was dead: therefore David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead.
20 Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the house of the LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.
21 Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread.
22 And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?
David anointed himself after he received the news of demise. In other words, he continued his spiritual responsibility. Notice also that God never said a word while David fasted and prayed about that matter for 7 days. That’s to further establish that God doesn’t interfere when our emotions are strong towards something else. He’d let us choose by ourself.
Please note that I’m not saying that God cannot help you choose a wife or touch the heart of your fiancé, I’m just saying that He’s very unlikely to do that if it’s going to be a threat to your relationship with Him. However, if your love towards God is incontestable, then there’s nothing He won’t be able to do for you.
Bishop David Oyedepo’s story inspires me alot. While his wife was sick and bedridden, he was traveling from one nation to another preaching the gospel. Another man of God would probably be distracted by the wife’s sickness, but according to Bishop Oyedepo, in all the places he went to minister, nobody knew that his wife was bedridden. It didn’t show in his countenance, at all. Ofcourse he loves his wife, but he loves God more. Funny enough, he has said this in front of his wife in one of our weekly services. He particularly said, “I love my wife and she knows it, but she also knows I love God more”.
Speaking of arguments, just because you disagree in some areas of thought doesn’t mean you have to argue about it. Argument affects the state of the heart, and too much of it may change a person’s mind towards you. When you notice something that is not in agreement with your beliefs, both of you should sit down and discuss it to have a win/win solution.
I hope this has brought enlightenment to someone.
Remain ever blessed, in Jesus precious name!
