“Pastor, I feel my husband gets over spiritual sometimes. You’d talk to him and he’d act as if he didn’t even hear you. It annoys me when he does that. What do I do?”
I’m honestly laughing right now😂. It’s not over spirituality, it’s a character that is common among people who wait on the Lord for wisdom, knowledge and understanding. What I mean is, when a spiritual person is unusually silent or quiet, he’s either waiting on the Lord for revelation or he’s receiving a revelation or inspiration from the Holy Spirit.
Attempting to get his attention when he’s in such a state may be detrimental. The difficult part is, a spiritual person doesn’t know when he’d be in that state. In fact, some people have gotten so used to that state that it now reflects on their life, they live a very quiet life. They won’t talk to you if you’re not talking to them. They’re always meditating on the word and the works of the Lord, and waiting on the Lord for revelation. They may go about their daily activity, like working, eating and the likes, but all will be done quietly.
Even till date, my wife still struggles with that sudden change. Sometimes she understands, and some other times she just forgets and continues calling on me and saying things that are distracting. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that what she’s saying isn’t important, but at that moment, where I was and what was happening was more important to me and even her.
Even as I write this, nobody can talk to me, everybody around me around this hour of the day knows that it’s not a time to talk to me. My mind is busy processing spiritual information in alignment with the Holy Spirit. It’s like I’m copying a note that is in the spirit, the moment I take my gaze off, I may miss it. Ofcourse I’d answer you if you greet me, but it would be a straight answer. Normally, I won’t give straight answers, I’d add niceties to it. But when I’m in the spirit, “Good morning sir” gets “Good morning” in return😂. To those who know me, a straight answer is also a sign that I cannot be disturbed. Humorously, some of my colleagues have gotten so used to it that they first ask me if it’s a good time to talk😂.
Just last Sunday, Dr Isaiah MacWealth was telling us what happens when he’s in such a state. If you enter his office and notice that he didn’t raise his head after greeting him, it means he cannot be disturbed. He knows you’re there, so don’t bother trying to draw his attention. Any further attempt to draw his attention may yield an unpleasant response.
Because I practice this character, it’s easy to relate and identify with people who practice it too. Actually, every true believer should practice waiting on the Lord. To wait on the Lord doesn’t necessarily mean to fast and pray, it also means to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit.
It was Job that said, “There is a spirit in man, but the inspiration of the Almighty gives him understanding”. This means that there should be moments in a man’s life where he should be disconnected from his physical environment and be connected to his spirit within – just so that he can receive inspiration from God.
I may be looking at you and yet not be with you. I may be sitting with you, acting like I’m listening to you, yet I’m listening to God. So don’t take offense when I tell you that I didn’t hear everything you said. It may be something you did or a word that you said that drove me into the spirit to receive inspiration. Personally, I meditate on anything that has the fragrance of inspiration or that has the breathe of the Holy Spirit on it. So if it’s something you said, I may just pick it and start meditating – even while you’re still talking.
Homorously, someone was sharing a situation with me one day when I caught light from something he said. While he was yet speaking, I suddenly screamed, “Ah! I just caught fire!”. How do you catch fire when someone is sharing a bad situation with you?😂. I immediately changed the conversation and started sharing what I had caught. When I was done, I said “I’m so sorry I had to cut you out, please continue what you were saying”. I couldn’t but notice this strange look as he said, “You’ve already given me the answer”😂.
So relax, it’s not over-spirituality, it’s a character you must get used to. Whenever he’s quiet or whenever he’s not responding to you, just let him be. You both need it.
I hope this has brought enlightenment to someone.
Remain ever blessed, in Jesus precious name!
