“Pastor, God has revealed my purpose to me, but I’m not sure what I need to do next. I’ve prayed to Him to direct me, but He doesn’t seem to be responding. What do I do?”

If He’s not responding to your prayers for guidance, then it’s most likely because there are already many people on this earth who can counsel you on how to commence that which God has purposed for you.

That’s right! Counsel! God rarely call people to pioneer a move, He’s either continuing a move or fine-tuning it. Read your Bible, literally everything that happened in the New Testament was spoken about in the Old Testament. While some of those Old Testament principles were fine-tuned in the New Testament, the main agenda was just continued.

Don’t get me wrong, just because there’s nothing new under the sun doesn’t mean there’d be no uniqueness to your purpose. John the Baptist came in the spirit of Elijah, yet there was no record of a miracle done by him.

Elijah was a mighty prophet during a turbulent time in Israel’s history. The nation had turned away from the Lord to worship Baal, and King Ahab had formed an alliance with Sidon by marrying their princess, Jezebel. Elijah was sent to show Israel the evil of their ways and encourage them to return to the Lord. His task is to prepare the way for God’s ultimate victory over the forces of darkness, and warn Israel of the coming Day of the Lord. I’m pretty sure you know Prophet Elijah’s story; he shut up the heavens – causing a drought, he multiplied flour and oil for a widow, he raised the widow’s son from the dead, he defeated the prophets of Baal with fire from heaven, among many others.

John on the other hand, someone who came in the spirit and power of Elijah, didn’t perform any miracle. Elijah was taken up by the chariots of heaven when it was time for him to depart from this world, but John was slaughtered as though he was never a man of God. They had similar purposes, but with their own uniqueness. John had all the power Elijah had, but his task had been fine-tuned, that’s why he didn’t need to perform miracles.

If your calling carries the spirit and power of a man of God in this time and age, then God is most likely calling you to continue or finetune that calling. Either way, you need counsel. Let me show you a scripture:

Proverbs 15:
22 Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellers they are established.

When God called me to be a teacher of the gospel, I started reading books and listening to messages of men of God who I knew had a teaching ministry. As I read and listened to them, what I needed to do became clearer to me. Ofcourse I started out imitating them, but God began to reveal my uniqueness over time. Today, if you read my article anywhere even without my name on it,  you’d be able to tell that I wrote it, except you’ve not been reading from me.

Counsel is powerful! Don’t forget that God doesn’t call us to pioneer a move, He’s either continuing or fine-tuning. Either way, you need counsel from those who seem to be in the same purpose as you. Buy their books and read, listen to their messages. It’s as you receive counsel from them that you’d discover your uniqueness.

Most people read about Ahitophel and conclude that he was a bad man, but many have failed to pick up a very powerful mystery from his experience. Let’s read from scriptures:

2 Samuel 16:
23 And the counsel of Ahithophel, which he counselled in those days, was as if a man had inquired at the oracle of God: so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.

Just look at that! The counsel of Ahithophel was as if a man had inquired it from an oracle of God. Which means whatever Ahitophel told you about a situation was the very thing an oracle of God would tell you. So there are men in this world who are custodians of wisdom and knowledge; through their walk and experience with God, they’ve gathered enough wisdom that can put anyone on the right track.

I remember many years ago while I was praying to God about a matter, and after many days of praying, God shockingly responded saying, “Why are you asking me a question that has already been answered by my servants?”. The moment I heard that, my prayer point ceased on that matter, instead, I started looking for books that talks about the situation. That’s how I solved that problem.

As I conclude, dissapointment is inevitable without counsel. The good thing about receiving counsel these days is that you don’t even need to meet the counselor physically, as long as they have books and resources. I’m not sure I’ve had to sit down with any of my mentors to discuss anything personal, I just listen to their messages and read their books.

I know I offer counseling on a daily basis, but it amazes me each time I receive questions whose answers are already written in my books. There are over 60 books on my website, you can’t tell me you read all sixty yet you didn’t find an answer to your question. If I was waiting for a physical counselor, I probably won’t be anything of value today.

So stop waiting. And stop bothering God too. Get counsel, and then God will reveal your uniqueness.
