“Pastor, I’m a young boy that loves to give to people, but I usually don’t get anything in return. Is it because of my age?”
The greatest interpretation of God’s kingdom to humanity is giving – which is sponsored by love. God would not even hold back Himself when it comes to proving how much He loves the world. The bible tells us that He so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son to die so that man could be redeemed from sin and Satan.
Nobody gives for nothing; God gave so that He could redeem man. Even if you intended to give for nothing, the law of giving and receiving doesn’t permit a person to give without receiving. Galatians 6:7 made this very clear when it said, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap”. Don’t deceive yourself, if you sow, then you will reap – whether you want it or not. Genesis 8:22 further clarifies this; it says, “While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest… shall not cease”.
Having established that, it’s important that I mention that receiving the harvest or returns for your “giving” has to follow an order. Read your Bible, you’d discover that those who were committed to giving always got returns through the works of their hand. That’s right, God blesses the works of our hands so that we can get returns for our giving. Think of Job, the bible tells us that he was the greatest man in the east. While you may want to assume that it must be because of the kind of business that he did, the bible didn’t leave us in the dark concerning what his secret was. Let’s see how scriptures put it:
Job 29:
4 As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle
5 When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me;
6 When I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil;
7 When I went out to the gate through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street!
8 The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and the aged arose, and stood up.
9 The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth.
10 The nobles held their peace, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.
11 When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me:
12 Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him.
13 The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.
15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame.
16 I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.
The summary of verse 4 to 11 was that everything was working for him because of the things he did from verse 12 to 16. He delivered the poor that cried, he helped the fatherless and those that had no help, he aided those who were about to perish and even put joy in the heart of widows. He was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame. He didn’t just feed the poor, he was also father to them. He took up cases he knew nothing about. This was the difference between Job and the other business men in his time.
Although a giver, but he was rated the greatest man because of the amount of livestock he had in his business. Every giver must have a business, or at least a job. If you’re not doing something that generates income, how would you receive your harvest? Think of David, historians are not aware of exactly how wealthy King David was. However, he ruled over a very wealthy kingdom as it dominated local international trade routes helping his kingdom become an economic power. David became rich off of the spoils and tribute brought to Jerusalem – as it was the capital of the kingdom. While you may think that those possibilities are coincidences, go and read about how David gave.
As a young person, if you understand what I’ve shared so far, then you would have realized that the only reason why you haven’t been getting financial returns is because you’re not presenting anything valuable or anything that should be paid for. At your level, the blessings of God would come as intelligence, which He expects you to convert into value that men can pay for.
That’s right! Don’t trivialize those ideas that come to your mind every now and then, they are pointers to what God wants you to do to generate income. If God is giving you an idea about medicine, then He’s probably telling you to develop yourself in that area. If you suddenly develop interest in something different from what you’re currently doing, then that’s God granting you intelligence to something more profitable.
So it’s not true that you’ve not been getting any return, you have, you just didn’t know how the returns come. Now that you know, put it to work.
Parents, teach your children how to give while they’re still young, and that’s because givers never miss their way in life. They always know what to do.
I hope this has brought enlightenment to someone.
Remain ever blessed, in Jesus precious name!
