“Pastor, how do I disconnect from the evil patterns in my family?”

It’s clear from scriptures that evil can be passed down to generations. Asides the possibility of selling off one’s heritage to evil covenants, God judges the generation of any one that serves other God’s besides Him. Let me show you a few scriptures:

SCRIPTURE 1:

Exodus 20:
2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.

Did you notice verse 5? God visits the iniquity of the father upon the children, and unto the fourth generation of his family. So whether or not your parents entered evil covenants that may influence your destiny, there’s also a weightier curse from the Lord for serving other gods. So imagine children suffering for things they knew nothing about.

SCRIPTURE 2:

1 Samuel 3:
11 And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.
12 In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.
13 For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.
14 And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.

Asides serving other gods, negligence can also attract God’s judgement. This scripture will continually be a caution to parents who don’t reprove their children for wrong doing. Eli was a prophet, one who judged Isreal for 40 years, yet because he allowed an abominable thing to happen and continue to happen under his roof, God determined to judge his house forever. Perhaps if Eli had cautioned his children when God told him about it, the punishment would have been averted, or it would probably be limited to just the sons that perpetrated the evil.

SCRIPTURE 3:

Numbers 14:
18 The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.

I love this one because it reveals a way out. Although it reveals that God visits the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the fourth generation, but He also forgives iniquity and transgression. So just because God has judged your family forever doesn’t mean He cannot forgive you. In fact, God can even forgive your own children’s iniquity because of the way you walk with Him. Remember how He didn’t touch Solomon for serving other gods – just because of the service of David his father. Instead, He passed the judgement on Solomon’s sons.

If a man’s righteous walk with God can exempt him from evil patterns or generational curses, then receiving Jesus as Lord and Saviour should be the very first step. This is because the moment you receive Jesus, you’ve become a new creature, the righteousness of God in Christ, old things are passed away and all things become new.

Romans 8:1-2 says, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death”. That’s right! There’s no more condemnation for you once you’re in Christ. Christ becomes the lens through which God sees you. The blood of Jesus wipes off the curse, and a new opportunity is created for you.

However, negligence of this truth can keep you in bondage. This is why you must commit yourself to personal spiritual development. What you don’t know can destroy you. Hosea 4:6 says “God’s people are destroyed for the lack of knowledge”. You won’t know what should not be happening if you don’t know what should be happening.
