“Pastor, I love how some men of God flow in the anointing, do you think I can also be anointed like that?”

Ofcourse you can. The anointing has always been for those chosen by God to both long after Him and live for Him. While only a category of people were selected or chosen in the old testament, we are all chosen in the new testament. As long as you are chosen, then there’s potential in you to be heavily anointed.

Don’t get me wrong, there are still many people out there who God gives special unique gifts to, but this doesn’t mean that a Christian who isn’t specially gifted cannot operate in the same measure when anointed. The difference between the gift and the anointing is that the gift works despite compliance by the gifted one, but the anointing would always demand compliance. An anointed healer may need some spiritual energizing to perform healing, while a gifted healer may not. In fact, even if he just completed a full plate of pounded yam, healing will still take place.

I had to establish that so you don’t begin to compare yourself with a person who is naturally gifted to do something. Please note the word I used; “naturally gifted”. Although it was given by God, but the gift works as though it’s natural. God can decide to gift a man with anything, it can even be the gift of songs. I know people that sing as though they live with God in heaven. There’s no way you won’t feel God’s presence when you listen to them. The amazing thing is, many of these gifted people are not so committed to God. If you find a person who is both gifted and anointed, he or she would always pull a crowd. Even in this time and age, I can point to only very few people that are both gifted and anointed. This is because, while it only requires God’s decision to gift a person, it takes hunger and thirst to be anointed. Let me show you a few scriptures.

SCRIPTURE 1:

Matthew 5:
6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Look at that! Anybody can be filled, as long as they continue to hunger and thirst after righteousness. The anointing doesn’t go to those who want the anointing, it goes to those who hunger and thirst for more of God. How much of God you know would determine how much of His power will work in and through your life. The key to walking in God’s power is in knowing God.

Praying for power won’t really get you empowered, it is your investment in knowing God that will. I lead a Christian fellowship back in the office and I did something yesterday that many of them won’t forget in a hurry. There’s a book I’ve been longing to buy but had not been released. Fortunately, it was released on Saturday with two other books. The total cost of the three books was close to forty thousand naira. I bought the books and showed them in fellowship yesterday, then I made the following remarks:

“Most of you see me as though I’m a magician that knows God’s word well. You love the way I preach and even wish in your heart that you can do likewise. The truth is, I was once like you, I wished that I could preach like those I looked up to. But then, if all I did was wish, I never would have gotten here. Desire alone won’t make you a world changer, you have to be hungry and thirsty. So I started developing my hunger and thirst for knowledge. When the knowledge I was getting from the altar was no longer satiating, I had to start investing my money in buying books. It wasn’t convenient to buy books, but I had to satisfy my hunger. I read books by several authors, some later became distant mentors – which I had to read all their books. Even after reading all their books, I was still hungry and thirsty for more. I kept on searching for people and resources that could satisfy my hunger, I even prayed to God to reveal them to me. That’s how I landed in a position where I buy books for almost forty thousand Naira. What am I looking for? God! The amazing part is, the more I attend to my hunger, the more I grow in power. Now that I think about it, it’s been worth it”.

So I’d ask you again, are you hungry? Are you thirsty? This kind of hunger is not automatic, it only comes upon those who are dissatisfied with this world and want to make a mark for God. As long as you’re comfortable in this world, then your spirit man cannot be hungry. Deal with that comfort in your flesh, so that your spirit man can take you on a journey of purpose with God. Don’t build your happiness around earthly things, that’s why you’re not hungry. You have to choose whether you want to be happy or you want to be hungry. No matter what you have or enjoy on earth, it still cannot be compared to the wealth of wisdom you’d get once you start living by hunger.

Finally, buy the truth, that’s what the bible says. If you really want to encounter the truth of God’s word, then you must be ready to spend money in buying resources that will enhance your knowledge. Remember, anybody can be anointed, as long as you hunger and thirst after righteousness. But your quest to pursue that hunger and thirst may not yield complete fruit except you sacrifice your income in buying the truth.
