“Pastor, everything God promised me about my career was working until recently when things became really difficult. I feel like God’s help is far away from me. What could have happened?”

I’m not sure, but scriptures points us to a number of things that may disconnect us from the help of God. Let’s touch a few:

1. VISION

Prov 29:18 tells us that “where there is no vision, people perish”. This includes people with purpose, passion, callings and assignments from God. Vision is the ability to see into the future of a thing in order to advance it. Vision is a must if progress must be recorded. Though God may have given you the business idea, but you’d need the mind of a visionary to succeed in it. Vision is not something you wait for God to show you; it’s a tool you engage to impact the world with your calling or ideas. A good idea without a great vision would not stand the test of time. What you start with a good idea can only be sustained with a good vision.

The Bible talks about people who “having sights, but they cannot see”. God gave us eyes for sighting, but created vision for seeing. Your eyes may sight what is within, but it is vision that sees what is beyond. Vision makes you futuristic in your approach and strategies.

Vision is a projection; it’s something you see or set, and begin to work towards. After writing for many years, I needed a notable progress, so I told God that I would love to be the official writer of one of my revered mentors. It was a daily prayer point for me until God finally told me that “eyes have not seen, nor ears heard, neither has it entered the heart of man, the things which He has prepared for me”. He continued by saying “if being the writer of that great man has crossed your heart, then it means I have something better for you”.

Honestly, I wondered for months, “who or what would be greater than this man?”. I didn’t know that God was raising me to become His oracle, to write as He directs. In other words, instead of writing for man, I’m writing for God Himself. What could be more glorious?

Bishop David Oyedepo has often shared a story of an experience he had with God after God called him. He sat down one day and asked God, “now that you’ve called me, who pays me?”. And God showed him from scriptures that he is on a divine appointment, and a labourer is worthy of his wages. Most of the breakthroughs he has recorded today were birth from visionary questions.

“Why, what, where” should be regular words for people who walk in purpose or people who are on an assignment. This is because, the moment you ask these questions, you start seeing ahead. And that’s what vision is about, seeing ahead so that you can move ahead.

In a nutshell, don’t remain in Brook Cherith when the grace of God has moved to Zarephath. The moment you notice an unusual difficulty, it’s time to ask questions. You may have compassed that mountain long enough, and it’s probably time to turn around.

2. SIN

According to scriptures, sin can literally seperate man from God. Not because God initiated the seperation, but because it’s impossible for God to behold sin.

God is Omnipresent, yet He couldn’t see Adam after he sinned against God. Imagine God asking Adam “where are you?”. God went to the garden of Eden to commune with Adam, He could hear Adam, but He couldn’t see him. Let’s see how scriptures put it:

Genesis 3:
8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

So things may have become difficult for you because each time God comes to deliver your blessing, He doesn’t see you. And if that’s the case, then you need to think deep, you may have transgressed against the Lord your God. It may be a little pride you displayed somewhere or to someone, it may be a little insignificant lie, it may be that you cheated someone, it may even be a wrong thought that you perceived. Remember that God was set to punish King Abimelech for perceiving a wrong thought towards Sarah.

God doesn’t joke with sin, especially with those who are serving His purposes. Read your Bible, you’d notice that each time the children of Isreal sinned, His mercy and support was immediately withdrawn until they repented. After Joshua lead the children of Isreal through the wall of Jericho, God instructed them not to take any accursed thing from the spoils, unfortunately, one of them did. That single disobedience caused them to lose 36 men in a battle. These were people who God swore to protect, but sin seperated them from God’s protection. The loss made Joshua seek the face of the Lord, and that was where the sin was revealed. That sin had to be dealt with before God’s protection was restored.

Personally, I’m very quick to repent. Each time the Holy Spirit nudges me that I may have exhibited pride or even told a lie, I quickly repent, even if it means telling the truth. I’d rather face the consequences of telling truth than telling a lie that can literally seperate me from God. The mistake many great men make is that they ignore little foxes, unknowing to them that it’s these little foxes that spoil the vine.

In the New Covenant, it’s almost the same. Even though sin doesn’t exactly seperate us from God, continuity in sin will negatively influence the grace of God upon our life. And once grace diminishes, our possibilities will reduce.

3. FEAR

This doesn’t need explanation. We were told from scriptures that the things Job greatly feared came upon him. The literal meaning of that is fear attracts the very thing that is being feared. If you’ve been fearful about having difficult times in business, then you’re definitely going to have difficult times in business.

I know that the current economy can easily make a man fear the future of his career, but the Just shall live by faith, not by fear. Fear is a trap!

4. DOUBT

A double-minded person would always be unstable in all his ways. So if you’ve been experiencing instability in your business, chances are that you’ve been nursing doubt in your heart. According to scriptures, a doubtful man cannot receive anything from God.

Again, the Just shall live by faith!
