“Pastor, why is it that anytime I dream of something good, I don’t remember the dream when I wake up?”
Someone once said that anytime you dream and you don’t remember the dream when you wake up, it means the dream wasn’t important. Painfully, I’ve not only practiced that, I’ve also taught people to ignore dreams that they don’t remember.
Somebody recently asked me the same question, and just while I was about to give the usual response, the Holy Spirit restrained me. As I woke up this morning for my quiet time, the first thing the Lord brought into my mind is this same question. But this time, with a revelation that made me pity myself for the things that both me and the people I have given that counsel may have lost. You know that feeling you get when you gain knowledge and suddenly realized that you’ve missed so much due to the absence of that knowledge. Yes, that’s the feeling!
This is why a wise teacher of the gospel should never speak as though he has the final revelation of a scripture. You’d be amazed that a revelation that was so deep yesterday may not even make it through the surface tomorrow. If you’ve followed me for at least 5 years, then you must have noticed some silent changes I made in my submissions. I used the word “silent” because I was never loud when I made the first submissions. So it was more of growing for me and those who follow me. Our previous knowledge may have worked to some extent, but the new things we know works better.
I heard that a renowned man of God tore his old books about tithing just because he discovered something new. While I acknowledge that the Old Testament principles of tithing doesn’t apply to believers today, I’m not going to tear my Old books where I talked about tithing, no way! Doing that would communicate to my followers that I made a mistake. I didn’t make a mistake, I only communicated God’s word based on my understanding that time. I may revise the book, but I’m definitely not going to tear or ban the old one. If the Old Testament was deleted from the Bible, how would we have learnt of the God of old? How would we have built a relationship with God? It may be old knowledge, but whether we like it or not, that old knowledge delivered many people from poverty.
Think of men like John D. Rockefeller who began tithing even as a child, and became one of the richest men in the history of mankind through the business of petroleum. He came from a poor family and an absent father. But his mother taught him about tithing, which still today brings prosperity to the Rockefeller family (his fortune when he died in 1937 was US$ 760 billion, adjusted to today’s rates. This is more than 12 times the wealth of Bill Gates). Tell me again, why would I delete the old book seeing the multitudes of testimonies that has emerged from it? Just because I have new knowledge doesn’t mean the old has stopped working. The only difference is that the new works better because of the peace it brings. Anybody who claims the old doesn’t work doesn’t really know this God that we serve, a God that permits us to get results according to our faith per time.
How did I even get here🤔😅? Okay, I was going to talk about not remembering your good dreams. I hope I can still talk about it.
You see, dreams and visions are the primary communication line by which The Holy Spirit passes a message to believers. Of course He engages other means of communication, but these two are His first point of consideration. If you check through the scriptures, you’d find that this is true. Except for matters of great importance, He won’t use His voice. Many times, a dream, vision or trance must have been seen before He eventually speaks. We saw this in the case of Peter and Cornelius. Peter saw a vision that he didn’t understand, and then he hears the voice of the Spirit to validate the vision he saw. That’s the Holy Spirit for you, He’d give most of the details in a dream or vision, then make a simple sentence with His voice – if necessary.
Now just because the The Holy Spirit communicates through dreams and visions does not mean every single dream you have comes from Him. Some dreams may not necessarily be from your spirit, your mind can also play clips while you are asleep. We call them soulish dreams, dreams that emanates from the mind.
Man is a triune being, which means he is a spirit which has a soul that lives in a body. When our human body sleeps, we’re told that our soul and definitely our spirit doesn’t sleep. Your soul may continue what you were doing or thinking about before you slept. It’s why most people who sleep hungry end up eating in their dream. Food occupied their thought until they slept, and so their soul had to complete the process. Some fearful people would start binding and casting just because they ate in the dream. Ofcourse, you should bind and cast if you were not hungry or fantasizing about a meal before you slept, but if you were, please don’t stress yourself😂.
You were thinking of traveling abroad before you slept, and suddenly you dreamt that you were doing very well abroad. Some people consider dreams like that to be an approval from God, when in actual fact, the dream doesn’t hold water.
You should also know that the devil can play with your mind whether you are asleep or awake. It’s your body that slept, your mind did not. So if he presents deceptive thoughts and ideas to you while awake, he’d show you clips and videos that will put fear in your heart while you are asleep. So whether asleep or awake, there’s no hiding place from the devil. There are lots of parameters to check if a dream was a soulish dream, but anytime you dream and then forget what you dreamt about, it wasn’t a soulish dream. Nobody forgets a dream that came from the soul. If you forget, then it’s definitely a message from the Spirit of God that your life depends on, and you have to do all you can to get it back. Let me show you a scenario from scriptures:
Daniel 2:
3 And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream.
4 Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, O king, live for ever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation.
5 The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if ye will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill.
16 Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would shew the king the interpretation.
17 Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions:
18 That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
19 Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.
Did you see that? The exact words of the king was, “the thing is gone from me”. In other words, he didn’t remember the dream. He didn’t remember the dream, yet the dream troubled him. This tells me that each time a dream you didn’t remember troubles you, then that dream is important.
If that’s the case, then you need to go for a retreat as fast as possible. When I say retreat, I don’t necessarily mean traveling to a mountain somewhere to seek God’s face, I just mean seperating yourself from distractions so you can be attentive to what God wants to unveil to you. If you notice verse 17 to 19, that was exactly what Daniel did.
While we are not sure why people forget their dreams, speculations have been that most people who forget their dreams are people who are not spiritual enough to transport the dream they had to their soul. If this is true, then it means I also need to work on my spirituality, because I’ve been in situations where I didn’t remember my dream. Actually, countless number of men of God who command great miracles also experiences this. So on one hand, that speculation may be correct, and on the other hand, it may not.
Thinking about it, until an information gets to your soul, you don’t have ability to process it into usable knowledge. This means that the dreams we don’t remember are stuck somewhere between the spirit and soul. It also means that if you’re able to travel into the realm of the spirit, then you’d be able to find that dream. And that is why a spiritual retreat is important.
I hope this has brought enlightenment to someone.
Remain ever blessed, in Jesus precious name!
