“Pastor, I fell under the anointing while I was being prayed for in church, but I’m surprised that my old habits are still there. Does it mean that God didn’t deliver me?”

Falling or manifesting under the anointing doesn’t necessarily mean that a deliverance has been established, it could also mean that the strongholds behind those habits are trying to resist your deliverance.

Demons understand spiritual authority, that’s why each time Jesus appeared before a demon-possessed person, the person would begin to manifest – obviously because the demon would be restless. As long as the demon is restless, the possessed person cannot be upright. It’s why protocols have been put in place in churches to restrain people who manifest under the anointing. We saw an example of these manifestations happen with the mad man at Gadara. As soon as the mad man sighted Jesus, he cried aloud and fell to the ground.

There was another instance where Jesus delivered a boy who had a dumb spirit. Let’s read from scriptures;

Mark 9:
17 And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit
20 And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.
21 And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.
22 And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.
23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.
24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.
25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.
26 And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.
27 But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.

Did you notice verse 20? The moment the demon sighted Jesus, it began to tare the boy apart. Doesn’t that sound like something we see in our churches today? When the anointing comes into an environment where there are demonic operations, manifestations like that are expected. The demons must submit to authority, and that’s the reason for the manifestations.

However, just because that demon submitted to the authority of Jesus doesn’t mean the boy had been delivered from that demon. I think this is where most believers miss it; falling under the anointing is submission to authority, and after submission comes deliverance.

So after the demon recognized authority, Jesus began the deliverance process from verse 25. He rebuked the demon with instructions to come out and not enter into the boy again. In verse 26, we were told that the demon cried out, ripped the boy apart and left him in a dead state. Right after that, Jesus lifted the boy up, and deliverance was complete.

Personally, I’ve been in services where deliverance was being conducted. When these persons were manifesting under the anointing and suddenly stopped as though they had died, you’d think the demon has really left them. Only for the man of God to go back to them to command the demons to come out. At that moment, we see another round of manifestation. Frankly speaking, men of God who do not understand this operation may keep having people who manifest under the anointing yet nothing changes physically.

Having said that, sustainable change begins when you commit to God’s word and doing all that it says. Even after deliverance, if you don’t commit yourself to living by God’s word, those demons will come back, even in greater dimensions.
