“Pastor, someone told me that if I want to succeed in this life, that I must channel all my energy to the things I love doing. What do you think about this?”
That’s very correct, but I need to be sure you understood what that person said correctly. To be frank, the things you already love doing may not require all your energy. However, if your desire is to impact your world with what you love doing, then you must be ready to engage all your energy in doing those things you probably don’t like doing.
Nobody has ever succeeded by doing only what they love doing, they had to endure the processes they hated or didn’t like. What you love doing can only bring meaning to your world when it is mixed with skills you most definitely would hate.
You probably love to sing, but except you want to communicate trash and just release songs that would momentarily excite your world, then you have to study. I wasn’t joking when I used the word “momentarily”. We’ve seen alot of musicians come and go, but the ones whose songs would always resonate are the ones that put in the effort to communicate intelligence and meaning through their songs. I’m sure you know one or two old songs that will always loose your tongue each time it is played.
Unfortunately, songs like that are hardly created today, and that’s because talented people ignore knowledge in the pursuit of their passion. They may have good beats, but their lyrics doesn’t hold value. It’s also why the average secular musician would sing songs relating to love, relationship, self, and bad government. Nothing else, only because they lack knowledge.
I laugh when I hear some talented celebrities make comments like, “I wasted my time going to school, I would have just focused on my talent”. What they didn’t realize is that they wouldn’t have been able to communicate their talents effectively without the knowledge they acquired through school. This is one of the greatest challenge I have with some pastors today. Just because God has called you into ministry doesn’t mean you should abandon your education. You need that education to communicate effectively to those He has called you to. And except God is training you by Himself, please go to school.
Many of you must think I love writing, but I don’t. I love teaching; as a matter of fact, that’s what God purposed for me on this earth – to propagate applicable knowledge to people. I don’t mind talking to you all day, but when I realized that my ministry was neither a church or video ministry, I had to let God teach me the best way to communicate my purpose to the world. That’s how I started writing.
It was my experience that made me realize that there is a difference between an anointed person and a gifted person. While a gifted person is naturally endowed to do something, an anointed person is supernaturally assisted with a skill just so that God’s ultimate purpose can be delivered.
While God gives you a gift which you’d naturally have strenght for, you’d also need His anointing to strengthen you to do the things you’d naturally not enjoy doing. (I hope I put that sentence correctly🙄). So even with God, you’re not expected to use only your strenghts to pursue purpose, you need a combination of your strenght and His anointing. Now you understand why the bible says “by strenght shall no man prevail”.
So I don’t love to write, but because of the anointing upon my life, I write as though I was born with a pen. What this means is that if I neglect God, then I’d probably begin to struggle with writing. I may not have any challenge talking, but writing may definitely become a struggle. Even if I go to a writing school, it can’t be compared to when the anointing is upon me. Don’t get me wrong, knowledge would always be an added advantage, but the anointing would make you stand out.
Let me conclude with something that may be a little out of our discussion:
You have to find the sickle for delivering your purpose and assignment in this world. Just because God called you to teach the gospel doesn’t mean you should open a church. Just because He gave you a good voice doesn’t mean He wants you to sing. And just because He told you to sing doesn’t mean He wants you to release an album or sing to a crowd. You have to find your place of relevance and develop yourself in that area. Anywhere else you go might just bring an unnecessary competition to you.
I was called to teach, not to a physical congregation, but to an online audience. It didn’t make sense initially, but it got clearer as I engaged the sickle that God gave me. I’ve been writing since 2012, authored my first book 5 years after, currently an author of over 60 e-books, and loads of lives have been transformed online just by following what I do.
Learn from David. Don’t fight Goliath with a sword when you should use your slings and stones. There’s no conventional way of deploying similar talents, sit down with God and receive directives on how to go about that which He has given to you.
